Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
