As any prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
