Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
