Our Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Place.

On the surface, this work could seem closer to an arduous scholarly examination than the latest pop project by a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Split across 4 different parts and voiced in 13 languages, we have a head-spinning symphonic opus that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily change, frequently through the prism of different women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of contributors. The pure ambition by itself renders the efforts of other artists look rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to avoid dry intellectual posturing is almost a miracle, with complete praise going to the artist. Although it's not the first time album to fuse the past and modern styles, the scale are far greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more pronounced. What truly elevates her fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts apart, you still desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful spirit shines clearly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string crescendo thuds in with comedic impact. The song then segues to the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never quite understand—nor want to know—what it is going next."

Almost every song ends in a totally distinct point from where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in digital chaos. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Art & Pop

Another crucial achievement of the album involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is no coincidence that the album has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies while it spins skyward. That trick gets echoed on another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its inherent excess. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires time to fully mine but never feels like hard work. Where some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast where the characters at the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's most endlessly creative visionary.
